I am Dr. Michael Zapf. I have been offering a full range of podiatric medical services, from ingrown nails to heel pain and foot surgery, to my friends and neighbors in the Las Virgenes, Conejo and Simi Valleys since 1985. This is my personal web site. It has been up since 1990 and has received more than 2 million visits. The entire site is my responsibility only and nearly everything on the site was written by me. You are welcome to peruse this site and learn what you can about me, your feet and the problems your feet can develop. Things happen fast in medicine so whatever you read could well be outdated, especially if it was written many years ago. On this site you will read historic articles that I wrote for a lay audience as long as 25 years ago, so please do not take anything on this site as definitive or as applying directly to your condition. You may wonder why I have my own site even though there is also an official practice site. Well, my partners are of a younger generation raised on tweets, e-mails and iPhones. They want a professional site that they believe better represents the professional nature of our practice. They also believe that people no longer take the time to read anything of length. I, on the other foot, think there is still a world out there full of people who still read lengthy descriptions of problems and solutions. if you are one of those old fashioned readers, then this site if for you. Let me know what you think. Let me know you are out there.

Please note that all information and photographs on this site are copyrighted by me, Michael Zapf, DPM, and cannot be used for any private or commercial purposes. I work with two other podiatrists in my practice who may or may not share any of my ideas and philosophy. Do not expect them to practice the way I do or even believe in any of the speculation I present here. If you appreciate what I have written and want me to be your treating doctor, you will have to ask for me specifically. Even if my office says at first, " He is booked until next month",  I still want to see you as long as you are a little flexible with your schedule. If your visit is an emergency, I know that  you will be happy with either of my associates, Dr. Darren Payne or Dr. Steve Benson. They are exceedingly well trained and capable in any foot emergency.

About Darren Payne, DPM, FACFAS, Board Certified, American Board of Podiatric Surgery ...

Dr. Payne was raised in the Conejo Valley and Agoura Hills area. He moved to Thousand Oaks with his parents in 1973.  He attended University Elementary for K-6th grade and then went to Los Cerritos for Junior High School.  Dr. Payne attended Thousand Oaks High School where he participated in basketball, wrestling, and student government.

After graduating from TOHS in 1987, he attended Brigham Young University and UCLA.  While on a summer vacation climbing Mt. Whitney, he was introduced to a podiatrist, who inspired him to pursue a career in the same field.  Upon completion of his studies at BYU and UCLA he was accepted to study Podiatry at the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco, CA.

Dr. Payne began his medical training at California College of Podiatric Medicine in 1993.  He was the head-teaching assistant for general anatomy and was also involved in several research projects.  He was active in student government and soccer during his graduate studies.  Dr. Payne graduated with honors from podiatry school in 1997.  He received his residency training from the VA medical center in Tacoma, WA and surgical training at the state of the art facilities of Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA.  While at MAMC, Dr. Payne was the Chief Podiatric Resident and was in charge of the Diabetic Foot Clinic.

Dr. Payne has been associated with Dr. Zapf and the Agoura-Los Robles Podiatry Centers since 1981. He practices all phases of general podiatric medicine and surgery. His special interest in diabetic foot care has carried over into his practice in the Conejo Valley. If you have a wound on your foot or an infected diabetic foot, Dr. Payne is the man to see. He has created what Dr. Zapf calls a "Virtual Wound Care Center" by involving himself in a network of other medical specialists. For diabetic wounds he has a referral network with specialists in Infectious Disease, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Endocrinology and Physical Therapy among others.

He is married to the former Laura Amussen of Salt Lake City and has three wonderful children, Spencer, Mason and Riley  Before coming to the Conejo Valley, Dr. Payne spent time in private practice in the cities of Seattle, WA and Bakersfield, CA.  .

In 2007 Dr. Payne passed the final hurdle toward Board Certification in Foot Surgery by passing the two day oral exam and defense of his surgical cases in his first try. He thusly is Board Certified. He has been accepted into the honorary educational arm of the podiatric profession only open to Board Certified Podiatrists, and is now a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgery. As a Fellow he is now allowed to list he initials FACFAS after his name. A hearty Congratulations is now due him for this stellar achievement.

Not content with just his prodigious knowledge of podiatric surgery, Dr. Payne has been asked to share his knowledge by conducting workshops and lectures at the two Western Podiatry Congresses held annually in Anaheim, CA.
